DALL E 2: The Phenomenon That Generates Unbelievable Visuals

What DALL E 2 holds for fashion and how the advancement will be used by fashion industry and professionals?

Think of the wildest things that you can, and now- magnify them. It’s not for nothing that we’ve all heard a ton of times about how the digital world and more specifically, AI is the future.

A new AI system from OpenAI called DALL-E 2 can take straightforward text descriptions and transform them into previously unimagined lifelike visuals. For instance, if you’d randomly type, “a panda riding a horse in space holding a lightsabre”, it generates a few images of the same in various styles. This is one of the first few largely accessible AI systems to convert text into fully rendered images. The site establishes that AI systems don’t only repeat what they know, they also enable people to see how cutting-edge AI systems see and comprehend the world.

How It Works

You could feed the craziest of sentences, click on generate, and in within minutes you have an actual visual of something that could once only be seen in your imagination! The technology enables individuals to visually express themselves in ways they would not have been able to before. It is even capable of starting with an image as an input and producing versions with various styles and viewpoints. The technology is advanced even further in DALL-E 2 because to its better resolution, improved understanding, and fresh features like “in-painting”. With in-painting, you have the additional freedom to edit an image and download it.

How Is It Beneficial For Fashion?

When we get to thinking of how beneficial such tools are for the fashion industry, it can undoubtedly be a game-changer. With the advent of 3D fashion, we’ve seen fashion shows take place entirely virtually, collections be designed and displayed using 3D models and now brands buying spaces in the MetaVerse. With DALL-E 2, we can use it to create unbelievable visuals and utilize it as a design tool for collections. Furthermore, it widens the scope of futuristic fashion in terms of design and functionality. If I were to type, “textured crocs designed by Balenciaga in collaboration with Leonardo Da Vinci”, that is exactly what I would get.

 The 30-Second Fashion Show

For Paul Trillo, an LA-based director, DALL-E 2 became a way to dial up his work manifold. Combining real-world video imagery with DALL-E’s synthetic creations, Trillo managed to create what he calls a “30-second fashion show”. With the outfits art directed and modelled by his wife, Trillo created a video which changes hundreds of outfits in a mere 30 seconds. To create the outfits seen in the video, he used variations of only text prompts to guide the AI, like “purple iridescent mylar oversize T-shirt” and “lavender purple puffy jumpsuit”.

“It opened the door to some pretty wild designs that I would have never come to on my own,” says Trillo, who describes the power as “limitless and overwhelming.”

Harnessing The Design Power of DALL E 2

The cornucopia of existing fashion designers in the industry aspire to reach Trillo’s level, but not all see the power of AI as he does, and those who do may fail to harness it. Using DALL E 2 as a design tool can aide designers in coming up with newer and never-seen-before ideas. By the mere insertion of words into the generator, DALL E 2 can form visuals that could not only be the foundation of a new ground-breaking design, but also the final executed version of it. This could bring down the estimated time and cost of creating collections, and as we’ve read before, anything that saves time and money for the industry becomes the new way of carrying out business.

What would we do if we could imagine absolutely anything? That’s the answer- anything.
